Welcome Callum
01 Jun 2026Hi! I’m Callum, and I’m finishing up my fourth year at UWaterloo, working towards a BMath in Mathematical Physics with a Computing minor.
Throughout the year, I will be collaborating with Professor Jeff Orchard as a part-time research student. Prof. Orchard sparked my interest in using neural networks to represent information through my time in his class on neural networks, CS 479. Together, we will be working on neural representations known as Spatial Semantic Pointers (SSPs), which are used to encode information in high-dimensional vectors. In realistic cognitive systems, these representations become corrupted as multiple pieces of information are combined together; our goal is to first represent this combination process mathematically, then investigate how a network of neurons can perform that computation and recover the original encoded information despite this interference.
Beyond my work in academics, I love staying active by playing basketball and running, and I enjoy travelling to new places both in Waterloo and around the world!
